WOMAN CRUSH OF THE WEEK

Progress Moyo – Professional netball player, plays for Platinum Queens, Gems

Can you tell us when and how your netball career started:
My netball career started when l was in primary school
But l started to see the green light in high school

In primary school it wasn’t that serious, like I didn’t even see myself as someone who could be a professional player one day. But that was the grassroots of my career. Then I went to High school and everything changed. In the hands of my high school coaches, l started winning awards for excellence in netball, individual prizes and also team victories.

From high school, l played for Harare City whilst awaiting my A level results. l had not decided to go pro by then When l got my results, l received a call from kwekwe based Glow Petroleum queens to join them. From this point my career in netball took a huge turn. This is where it all got serious. I played at Glow for 2 years whilst l was studying Music and Musicology at Midlands State university, that was 2014 and 2015, and in 2016 l was on attachment and I didn’t play netball the whole year but l was coaching at the school where I was teaching. In 2017 l went back to MSU for my for my final year and that’s when l joined Platinum Queens.

From 2017 upto date, l play for the Zvishavane based platinum queens. I got most of my achievements at this team. It’s also where I got shaped up into a national team player and I got my first call in the national team in 2019

What’s the greatest lesson you have learnt in netball:
Netball has taught me team work, it has also taught me that no man is sufficient on his or her own, we all need each other, one’s weaknesses are covered by other people’s strengths and this also applies to the life out of the netball court. Netball has also taught me discipline, self control, patience, tolerance and l have also learnt to be considerate. The greatest lesson l have learnt is hardwork. In sport we say you play as you train, the effort that l put in my training determines how l will perform during the day. This also helps in life off court, no matter what l do, l give it my all. Being a shooter has also taught me to take risks, deal with pressure and also be creative.

Internationally, l would love to meet Maria Folau Emeliaranne Ekenasio, Sasha Corbin.

Outside netball what else do you do:
Outside netball, l am a student at Midlands State University.

With the lock down and being off pitch, it hasn’t been and it’s not easy. However, l have been doing workouts at home, watching previous games and the others that are currently being streamed live from other countries.

Can you tell us a bit about your fitness classes, what inspired you to start:
I was inspired to start the fitness classes by my gym coach at platinum. He always wants the best for his athletes. Once l decided not to see his sessions as punishment but as a way of molding me into the best version of a player that l can be, l started getting that extra love for fitness and now it’s an addiction.

Do you see yourself taking up a profession bin fitness training:
Definitely

What’s your greatest motivation in life:
My greatest motivation in life is happiness.

If you had super powers what would you change in the world:
If l had super powers to change the world , l would restore love

What advice can you give to other young netballers who want to pursue their dreams:
To the upcoming players, the greatest thing that you can do is to be disciplined, in and off court. Work hard, always put in maximum effort. Know your weaknesses and strengths as well as as those of your team mates so that you work towards building each other.
