Let’s practice inclusive feminism: Opinion

March is the Women’s month and on the 8th of March women across the globe joined in to celebrate Women’s Day. For the whole month, individuals, institutions and organisations have been uplifting fellow women and it’s the most beautiful thing to see Queens fixing each other’s crowns.

But girls gather here, let’s talk, aren’t we a bit selective in our feminism. I mean, little is said about women in rural areas there, and absolutely nothing is said about sex workers and the LGBTQI community. Or does our activism only align with what resonates with our religion and morals. Come on, we can do better.

We exclude women who do not share our anatomy, we judge those who act and dress against our moral beliefs. “Slay queens” are attacked left, right and centre, sometimes by fellow women. We are only body positive on social media yet in real life we laugh at our neighbour who has a plus size body.

We celebrate career women and that’s fine. But we go on to judge sexworkers and call them gold diggers. We only accept who we want to be but fail to accept fellow women who are not what we want.

Somehow we “choose our battles wisely”. We are totally silent about certain issues because they are too political or could end us in trouble. Yet in some cases women rights violations go unattended.

We judge our peers who pose for photoshoots half dressed (or half naked lol), but drool over our favourite male celebrities who show off their six packs.

Feminism or women rights activism means advocating for gender equality. It should cut across all sections of womanhood. Only then can we start making sense to the world, or else the feminism movement will continue being bastardised by those who want to perpetuate patriachy.
