The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has cautioned political parties and stakeholders against offering voter registration incentives, stating that it could encourage individuals who are already on the voters’ roll to register multiple times.
Zvishavane ZEC District Elections Officer, Mr Regressa Dube, recently spoke out against this practice, deeming it unacceptable.
Previous mobile voter registration exercises have been marred by reports of stakeholders enticing prospective registrants to vote.
Meanwhile, some political parties have voiced concerns over the ongoing 10-day voter registration campaign launched by ZEC, which ends on March 21, 2023.
They argue that the campaign should extend to the ward level to allow more citizens to access registration centres.
Ellen Shiriyedenga, the deputy secretary for elections at Citizens Coalition for Change, highlighted the significant number of unregistered young people and urged ZEC to synchronize its voter registration efforts.
The final mobile voter registration exercise which started yesterday will run until the 21st of March.
Eligible voters will be able to register to vote until two days after proclamation of election date by the President.
