The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has recently launched an Elections Strategy aimed at promoting and safeguarding human rights during elections.
According to Mrs. Karukai Ratsauka, the ZHRC’s Education, Promotion, Research Director, the commission is committed to enforcing human rights throughout the electoral process.
In an interview, Mrs. Ratsauka emphasized the importance of ensuring that human rights are respected and upheld during elections.
The ZHRC’s Elections Strategy is designed to contribute to this objective by providing guidance and support to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
Zimbabwe has had a long-standing history of human rights violations, which has led to the imposition of international sanctions on the country.
The government has been accused of suppressing opposition voices, clamping down on media freedom, and committing atrocities against its citizens.
Against this backdrop, the ZHRC’s Elections Strategy is a significant step towards promoting and protecting human rights during elections.
The strategy provides guidance and support to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process, including political parties, the media, and civil society.
As an independent national institution, the ZHRC is mandated to protect and promote human rights in accordance with the country’s Constitution and international human rights standards.
With its Elections Strategy, the commission is taking concrete steps to ensure that these rights are upheld during elections, which are a critical component of democratic governance.
