Pregnant Women Urged to Take Precaution, as Zim Records Two Mpox Cases

As the threat of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, looms over Zimbabwe, health officials are emphasizing the need for women, particularly pregnant women, to take proactive measures to safeguard their health and that of their unborn children.

With two confirmed cases of the virus reported in the country, the urgency for awareness and safety precautions is paramount.

Mpox is a viral disease that can be transmitted from person to person, and recent studies have raised alarms about its potential impact on pregnant women.

Doctor Wallace Hlambelo, a prominent health expert in Zvishavane, highlighted the findings of a recent study that examined the effects of mpox on expectant mothers.

“Research indicates that women who contract mpox during pregnancy face serious risks, including stillbirths and complications that can lead to the death of either the mother or the child,” he explained.

“During pregnancy, a woman’s immune system is somewhat compromised, making them more susceptible to infections. The study found that mpox can disturb the health of both the mother and the developing fetus.”

In light of these findings, health officials are urging women to adopt several safety measures to protect themselves and their babies. These precautions include:

  1. Avoiding Close Contact: Pregnant women should minimize close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms of mpox, such as rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes. This is crucial to reduce the risk of transmission.
  2. Practicing Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water or using hand sanitizer can significantly lower the risk of infection. Women are encouraged to maintain strict hygiene practices, especially when in public spaces.
  3. Being Vigilant for Symptoms: Expectant mothers should remain alert for any signs of illness and seek medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms associated with mpox. Early detection is key to managing potential complications.
  4. Community Engagement:Participating in community discussions about mpox can help spread awareness and encourage collective action to prevent the virus’s spread. Sharing information and resources can empower women to make informed decisions about their health.
  5. Careful Clothing Practices: With the popularity of thrift shopping among Zimbabwean women, it is essential to wash all second-hand clothing thoroughly before wearing them. This practice can help eliminate any potential pathogens that may be present.

Meanwhile, health authorities have confirmed two cases of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in Zimbabwe, prompting increased vigilance and public health measures. One of the confirmed cases is located in Mberengwa, where the individual has been placed in isolation at Utsanana, while the other case has been reported in Harare.

Local health officials have reassured communities in Mberengwa and Zvishavane that there is no immediate cause for alarm. The individual in Mberengwa is under strict quarantine, and contact tracing efforts are underway to prevent further spread of the virus.

“Residents of Mberengwa Centre need not fear, as the affected individual is in a controlled environment, and all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure public safety,” stated Dr. Hlambelo, a Zvishavane based doctor. “The situation is closely monitored.”

Health experts emphasize the importance of public awareness and education about mpox, which is primarily transmitted through close contact with an infected person or animal. Symptoms can include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, but with proper precautions, the risk of transmission can be minimized.

In Zvishavane, local officials have also sought to allay fears, urging residents to remain calm. “We are working diligently to ensure that all necessary health protocols are in place. The community should continue with their daily lives while practicing good hygiene and being aware of any unusual symptoms,” said Dr. Hlambelo.

The Ministry of Health is also educating citizens about mpox, including its symptoms, transmission methods, and preventive measures. Individuals are encouraged to seek medical attention if they exhibit any signs of illness and to report any suspected cases to health authorities.

As the situation unfolds, health officials continue to urge the public to stay informed and vigilant, reinforcing that prompt reporting and adherence to health guidelines are essential in controlling the spread of mpox.
